Citizen Group Presents Fort Union Ideas To City

Dozens of Cottonwood Heights residents, property owners and business owners along Fort Union Boulevard came together as a working group to create a welcoming and attractive streetscape for the Fort Union corridor. The neighborhood working group considered the entire corridor from Union Park Drive to the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon for traffic solutions, beautification, pedestrian/bicyclist circulation and bringing some of the underutilized properties up to date. Residents met with the city staff to design a road they felt would encourage a "Main Street" feel to the area.

Three groups studied three sections of Fort Union Blvd, and even walked the corridor to get a sense of future context for the improving this main artery through the city. Through this work, the group determined that some new road designs were needed to redevelop the area and to meet the future needs of future developments. In their renderings, participants added bike lanes, wider sidewalks, street trees and landscaped medians. The groups presented their findings to the city council in January.
